Improving the safety of our city is a priority – both day and night. Whether coming to Exeter to shop, for an evening meal or to enjoy a night out, everyone should feel confident that Exeter is a safe place. We are committed to ensuring the safety of staff, visitors, and customers.
Community Safety .
Our Community Safety Team launched July 2024 through collective investment by Exeter City Council and InExeter, supported by additional funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner. The team’s establishment is part of a broader effort to boost the city’s vitality, promote economic growth, and ensure that Exeter remains a safe and enjoyable place to live, work, and visit.
The team conduct regular patrols in areas identified as anti-social behaviour hotspots, providing a visible deterrent to unwanted activities while reassuring residents and businesses. They enforce the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), targeting issues such as street drinking and aggressive begging.
Their efforts represent a collaborative, multi-agency approach that includes partnerships with the city’s CCTV control room, Exeter’s Neighbourhood Policing team, Exeter Business Against Crime (EBAC), and InExeter.
Exeter Business Against Crime.
Exeter Business Against Crime (EBAC) is a business crime reduction partnership dedicated to combating business crime and anti-social behaviour. It provides a two-way radio communication network between businesses and the City’s CCTV control room to increase awareness of offenders and criminal activity in the City.
In addition, EBAC has a reporting platform called SENTRY SIS. This is a secure intranet which allows businesses to share up to date images and incident reports of those who commit shoplifting or anti-social behaviour offences. SENTRY SIS allows us to gather and share intelligence between members and with the Police as determined by data exchange protocols.
InExeter offer a £100 subsidy on EBAC membership for all levy paying businesses.
Evening & Night Time Economy.
InExeter commissioned Night Time Economy Solutions to work on a strategy for our evening and night time economy. The outputs from this inform our annual application for Purple Flag status. We are working to enhance the experience of Exeter in the evening though:
• Chairing a strategic working group for the Evening and Nighttime Economy with representatives from the Police, Street Pastors, Council, College, University and Marines.
• Leading the coordination of Exeter’s annual application for Purple Flag status.
• Coordinating a Forum for business active in the Evening & Night Time Economy.
• Supporting Best Bar None, a scheme designed to deliver excellence in guest experiences and safe operating procedures in venues.
Community Safety Partnership.
InExeter represents businesses on the Exeter Community Safety Partnership (CSP), a multi-agency strategic group created with the sole purpose of ‘making a safer city’.
By working closely with our partners, we can ensure that resources are directed towards the issues, crimes and anti-social behaviour that impact our business community and visitors to the area the most.
We represent our business members on:
- Safer Exeter (CSP) Executive Group – meets quarterly.
- Safer Exeter (CSP) Management Group – meets monthly.
InExeter also chair two subgroups of the CSP:
- Tackling ASB– meets quarterly.
- Evening and Night time Economy – meets quarterly.
