Dreamer of Dreams.
As part of InExeter’s 2025–2030 Street Art Project, the wall of local tech company IT Champions was brought to life with the help of artist Jamie Whyte. The mural celebrates Exeter’s unique identity and culture, blending the city’s heritage with the innovation and openness that define IT Champions.
The Design.
Jamie Whyte carefully considered each layer of the design. The warm orange and yellow tones reflect IT Champions’ brand colours. On the left, the symbols reference Toisa’s crosses, the late Saxon stone crosses that once stood on Gandy Street and now reside in the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM). These motifs transition into a circuit pattern, symbolising innovation and the company’s technological roots.
Sunrays burst from the painting, highlighting lines from Arthur O’Shaughnessy’s poem Ode – words that capture the vibrancy and creativity of Gandy Street, home to many of Exeter’s independent businesses.
At the centre stands the man from A Portrait of A Man in a Red Suit, an artwork archived at the RAMM. The man, dressed in a striking red suit and painted with a calm and commanding expression. Although the identity of the sitter remains unknown, his image is significant in thinking about our cultural history. The sitter’s expression contributes to the painting’s power and mystery. The ambiguity of his gaze invites viewers to reflect on the sitter’s possible status and the broader historical context of Britain at the time.
